"Shared" autonomous cars?

Autonomous cars are coming, of course. I’m bitter about it but I’ll learn to accept it (I guess).

One thing I won’t accept, however, is the decline of auto ownership. I am not “sharing” a car. I’m not hailing a random autonomous car to come pick up my wife, future kid, and myself and shuttle us wherever. Can you imagine the messes (and various bodily fluids) people might leave behind? *shudders*

I’ve seen how disgusting some people allow their cars to become. And I’ve seen how disgusting public transportation is in big cities. Yuck.

There may be autonomous cars, but if I can manage it, I’ll sure as hell have my own.

I’ll promise not to leave such a big mess. It would be all liquids anyways so clean up should be easy for the next person

While I wouldn’t want to share a car with 13 randomly selected area residents, what about your wife? Or teenage kids? Autonomous cars could definitely shift two+ car households to single car households. Even if only 30% (which is probably a low number) do so, that’s a huge chunk of car ownership.

The only way autonomous cars are coming is if people start purchasing them. If the average age of vehicles on the road today is 11-12 year old, it’s probably going to be 2-3 decades before you start seeing autonomous cars as part of your daily life I would think.

It’ll be like the new taxi company car, minus the surly immigrant behind the wheel.

I patiently wait for the day when I am Grandpa, with my convertible and manual transmission, with some old fashioned halogen lights.

OUTTA MY WAY, SONNY.

I'll gladly share a commuter car with my wife but I need to have an old manually driven clunker to tinker with.

If they’re cheap enough I’d bet they become commonplace much sooner than that, at least in urban areas. My thinking is that these cars, regardless of their price, will be seen as exotic status symbols* first and foremost so within a few years they’ll be a trendy pick for the wealthy tech crowd kind of like Teslas and Leafs are, which will in turn drive the young middle-class professionals wanting to seem progressive and forward-thinking to purchase them if they’re cheap enough. Could be like how the CLA and A3 and 3-series are all huge sellers because of the brand prestige, only autonomous cars will be the same because of the technology prestige. It’s only a matter of price point and how long it takes the technology to trickle down.

*for lack of a better term.

“There may be autonomous cars, but if I can manage it, I’ll sure as hell have my own.”

Shared autonomous cars shouldn’t be bad at all!

Look at it this way... it’s like getting sex from a prostitute... or having a wife who makes some extra money on the side turning tricks.

Many people see prostitutes every day.

So if they can, you can too!

Only difference is, instead of only exposing part of you, when you get into the prostituted. .. err... shared autonomous car, you’re enveloping your whole body in the germs, oils, smells, gasses and other excretions from other people who used the prosti- shared car.

Sure... some of that stuff will cling to you and crawl up into your nose, mouth, ears and anus, but your immune system should be up to the task, right?

You just have to learn to relax and enjoy the experience of being driven around while armies of microscopic organisms set up camp in all those places where the sun doesn’t shine...

Oh btw... do you need me to give you a lift anywhere? My Focus only has 236,000km on it and only has a half a dozen previous owners... some of which, like me, probably used public transit some of the time...

:-D

I think people will start purchasing them... and it will be cars that have optional autonomous modes.

I can also see taxicab and mass transit companies buying them.
